Public Enemies (2009)
If this had come out maybe 4-5 years ago I would have been all over it. It would have probably been my favorite film becuase back then The Godfather, Goodfellas and The Untouchables were all my craze. I even wrote a Mafia based short story that I've been meaning to elaborate on for 5 years. But in the years since I've kinda lost my taste for Mafia/ Syndicate based media.
Public Enemies stars 2 of my favorite actors, Johnny Depp as the infamous John Dillinger, and Christian Bale as the G-man tracking him, Melvin Purvis. Depp was excelent as Dillinger but I was kinda dissappointed in Bale's performance but that might be due to overall lack of screen time, so his character was unable to develop.
The film did have a few innaccuracies but only those educated on the subject will notice. You can look them up if you care enough but the writers just took some creative liberties for the sake of story telling.
I believe I can say im not a huge fan of Director Michael Mann, this was his 4th film I've seen that he Directed, and this was the best of the 4. (Ali, Collateral, Miami Vice) He seems to like using one of my least favorite actors in Jamie Foxx. Thankfully he was absent from Enemies.
There were a few scenes that really seemed to drag on. The film clocks in at 143 minutes and they probably could have cut out 30 minutes of useless footage without damaging the overall context or quality. And one would think that they could have cut some draggin scenes and given more screen time to Bale, but thats just me because he is God-like in my book
An overall good film that I would have enjoyed a lot more a few years ago. It is worth a buy, I'm thinking of buying it, but if the subject is of no interest but you still want to see it, it is definetly worth the rental.
Public Enemies recieves 7 "Patrick Bateman's"...out of 10
This probably would have been a 9 or 10 for me a few years ago.
